Discover the calming aroma and refreshing taste of chamomile, often compared to a crispy apple. This ancient herb was used by civilizations such as Egypt, Rome, and Greece for centuries. The Egyptians held chamomile in high regard, often dedicating it to the sun and using it to embalm pharaohs. Its fever-reducing abilities were praised by ancient Egyptian healers, who called it the "flower of the sun god". Drinking chamomile tea on the third day of each month was a common practice, known for its ability to clean and disinfect the stomach, bringing a sense of relief and joy. As part of the daisy family, chamomile boasts beautiful white flowers with radiant petals and a yellow center.
The flowers of Chamomile are the medicinal part and can be gathered during bloom to use fresh or dry for later. It can be taken internally for various issues including gastritis, anxiety, and insomnia, as well as for children's ailments like teething and colic. To make a herbal tea, steep 1 tablespoon of fresh flowers in hot water for 5-10 minutes, or use 1-2 teaspoons of dried flowers and strain before drinking. The infusion can also be added to a bath to soothe a fussy baby or relieve diaper rash. For breastfeeding mothers, the tea can help with colic and provide relaxation. The herb has antibiotic and anti-inflammatory properties for external use, making it useful for sunburn, wounds, and leg ulcers. In addition, the tea can act as a hair rinse to enhance blonde highlights and as a facial steam to open pores, kill bacteria, and reduce inflammation.
