Lime green leaves splashed with maroon crisp and sweet. This heirloom variety from Austria is called "speckled trout" due to its leaf speckling. It features heat tolerance and crispy, yet tender, leaves. Originally rediscovered by Nancy Arrowsmith of Noah's Ark, an organization focused on preserving genetic resources in Austria, it is also known as "Trout Back" and "Freckles". According to historian William Woys Weaver, this type dates back to 1793 and is a dwarf version of a German variety called "Spotted Aleppo". Its name, "spotted like a trout," comes from its Austrian heritage. Forellenschluss is a true gardener's delight, offering both visual appeal and exceptional flavor. The striking contrast between the lime green base and maroon speckles creates a beautiful addition to any garden bed or container. This lettuce variety grows well in diverse conditions and maintains its sweet, non-bitter taste even as temperatures rise, making it perfect for Australian gardens.

Open-pollinated, not chemically treated, Non-GMO, non-hybrid, heirloom seeds.

How to grow-

Sow direct in Spring & Autumn into furrows. Nitrogen rich soil with plenty of organic matter mulch well to conserve water. For best results with your Forellenschluss Speckled Trout lettuce seeds, prepare a well-draining bed in either full sun or partial shade, depending on your climate. These Austrian heirloom seeds thrive when planted 6mm deep in rows spaced 30cm apart, with seedlings later thinned to 20-25cm between plants. The nitrogen-rich soil promotes lush leaf development, while organic matter improves soil structure and water retention. Apply a generous layer of mulch around seedlings to maintain consistent soil moisture and suppress weeds. In Australia's climate, consider succession planting every 2-3 weeks for a continuous harvest throughout the growing season. Water regularly but gently, preferably in the morning, to keep soil consistently moist without waterlogging. Harvest outer leaves as needed once plants reach 10-15cm tall, or wait for full maturity at 55-65 days. These heat-tolerant lettuce plants will reward your care with their distinctive speckled appearance and deliciously crisp, sweet leaves that add both visual appeal and flavor to your homegrown salads.
