Mangel wurzel is an heirloom variety of beet that belongs to the same Beta vulgaris species as beetroot, silverbeet and sugar beet. It has had several names over the years, including mangold, mangold wurzel, manglebeet, yellowbeet, and other variations on the theme. These remarkable roots were traditionally grown as a reliable winter feed crop for livestock, valued for their impressive yields and nutritional content. Today, gardeners are rediscovering mangel wurzels for their versatility in the kitchen and garden. The large, sweet roots can be roasted, boiled, or grated into salads, while the leafy tops make nutritious greens. Growing these heirloom seeds connects you to generations of gardening heritage while providing a productive, low-maintenance crop suited to Australian conditions. Perfect for both experienced growers and those exploring heritage varieties for the first time.

How To Grow:

Growing mangel wurzel follows similar principles to beetroot, with a few key adjustments for success. These plants thrive in sunny spots with well-draining, fertile soil rich in potassium, and they need consistent moisture to prevent root splitting. The main difference is their sensitivity to heat—in warmer climates, provide afternoon shade using cloth or netting to protect them from intense sun. Because mangel wurzels develop much larger roots than beetroot, spacing is crucial: allow 50cm between plants in cooler southern regions where roots can reach 20kg, or 30cm spacing in northern areas where they typically stay smaller. Harvest leaves selectively once they're established, using a clean knife to cut just above the root. Pick roots for eating while still young and tender, reserving larger specimens for livestock feed. Always harvest before frost arrives, as cold weather can damage the roots. With regular weeding, pest management, and steady watering, you'll enjoy an impressive yield of this distinctive and rewarding vegetable.
