Lemongrass is a fast-growing perennial cherished for its fresh lemony flavor, widely used in broths, soups, and curries. The white stalk delivers a strong, vibrant taste, while the green leaves offer a milder flavor perfect for homemade tea. Beyond its culinary uses, lemongrass is valued for its potential health benefits. It may help alleviate insomnia, digestive and respiratory issues, fever, and infections. Its antioxidant properties could support the immune system and protect against antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Additionally, lemongrass may aid in balancing cholesterol, managing type 2 diabetes, and promoting healthy skin. Commonly used in aromatherapy, it also helps reduce fatigue, anxiety, and unpleasant body odor, making it a versatile and beneficial herb to grow and enjoy.
How To Grow :
Sow seeds in spring after frost risk passes on the soil surface, lightly cover and keep moist with a dome to retain humidity. Maintain soil temperatures around 20°C for best germination, avoiding over-watering. Germination in 7-14 days. Lemongrass thrives in warm conditions, does not tolerate frost, and can be divided at the end of Autumn for indoor overwintering or started anew each spring.
HARVEST:
Harvest leaf stalks from the outside of the clump to use in cooking or for tea. Begin picking anytime after clumps are well established and growing vigorously. Use fresh or dry. To dry, place in a warm, well-ventilated location out of direct sunlight.
